VIDEOWEST / TV FOR THE REST OF US
An independent TV studio based in San Francisco, California, Videowest produced hundreds of TV magazine shows and music videos from
1978 to 1984. Its award-winning weekly series (Backstage Pass, Best of Videowest, Rock On, Take Off) were released on a variety of broadcast and cable outlets including ABC, BBC, Disney, MTV, Showtime, USA and public TV.
Videowest's creative trademark was a fast-paced montage of interviews, comedy, music and news around weekly themes like "Beauty" or "TV" (see sample videos in the sidebar). Over the years, Videowest featured hundreds of popular artists like Laurie Anderson, Ray Bradburry, the Clash, Francis Coppola, Elvis Costello, Devo, the Ramones, REM, U2 and many more.
Videowest started as a grassroots movement, with thousands of young volunteers joining forces to create "television for the rest of us." Founder Fabrice Florin spearheaded that community as a labor of love, inviting viewers to help produce the weekly shows. He was joined by Lee Callister, Joe Dea, Wes Dorman, Jeff Nemerovski, Erik Nelson, Michael Branton and hundreds of regular contributors, leading to many successful careers in the film and TV industry.

PINWHEEL
Pinwheel is a children's television show that aired on the Nickelodeon cable network from 1977 to 1990. The show originally aired on channel C-3 of Warner Cable's interactive system QUBE in Columbus, Ohio, and it began airing on Nickelodeon when it first launched in April 1979.
The show was similar to Sesame Street with live action skits mixed with animated shorts. Action scenes took place in and around a large Victorian-style house called Pinwheel House with a pinwheel on one of the peaks. Live actors would interact with puppets, discussing various concepts familiar to children's programming like sharing and being considerate, basic learning skills like colors, numbers and letters. All of the characters lived and worked in the various areas in and around the house.
There were a total of 260 one-hour Pinwheel episodes recorded from 1977 to 1982. However, Pinwheel was typically broadcast in 3 to 5 hour long blocks with multiple one-hour episodes shown back-to-back. It remains the longest-running Nickelodeon show in episodes and hours on air, and was the longest-running in years until You Can't Do That on Television broke the record. It is now #6, behind All That, You Can't Do That on Television, Nick News, Rugrats and SpongeBob SquarePants.
One of the most memorable things about Pinwheel was that it featured a wide variety of both regularly animated and stop-motion animation short films or cartoons from many different countries, most of which were only about five minutes long.

THE TRIPODS
The Tripods is based on a series of novels by John Christopher and was jointly produced by the BBC and the Seven Network in Australia. In a post-apocalyptic future, humanity have been conquered and enslaved by unseen alien entities who travel about in gigantic three-legged walking machines referred to as "the tripods". Human society is largely pastoral, with few habitations larger than villages, and what little industry exists is conducted under the watchful presence of the tripods whom are believed to be their overlords.
From the age of 14 humans are required to obtain implants called "caps", which suppress curiosity and creativity and leave the recipient placid and docile, incapable of dissent. Two boys from a small English village decide to escape before they are capped and find themselves on an adventure through France, which winds up being more alien to them than the Tripods themselves.
Soon into their journey, they hook up with a skinny inventor whiz kid named, Beanpole, who has a terribly fake french accent, but that could also be the reason why his character is so lovable. What's also unintentionally entertaining is how many times they come up with reasons to speak English rather than French while in France.
I watched all 13 episodes in a row today. Call me crazy, but I highly recommend it for any lover of a good teleplay. A rainy or snowy day with a cup of tea would be the ideal conditions for a day with The Tripods.
