50 artists were chosen by Polaroid and given a Polaroid GL10 printer with the freedom to create whatever came to mind and to give them a chance to explore the infinite number of ways technology can enable creative expression. The exhibition features a mix of artists which include Philip-Lorca diCocia, Norman Jean Roy, Jean Pigozzi, James Franco,Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Chase Jarvis, Marylin Minter, Dabs Myla, Hilary Pecis, and myself.

I will debut 50 new works from a new series called BEING. All photographs were taken on a road trip visiting significant UFO sites across America created specifically for this project.

Made in Polaroid opens to the public on September 7 at Phillips de Pury & Company’s gallery at 450 West 15th Street in New York City, with works being auctioned on September 14 at Phillips de Pury & Company’s other gallery location on 450 Park Avenue.

Just about everyone in LA is talking about Prince's 21 Night Stand, a series of shows he is playing at the Los Angeles Forum with a mindblowing ticket price of $25. It's a must see show, not only to see Prince dance backwards in high heels, but to experience an all-soul revue in a defunct basketball stadium.

Is this the future?

Prince, you deserve much respect for creating such an experience. Even better is seeing all those talented women on stage. I like to imagine all the women who left inspired. Sheila E, of course, is the queen. I'll be spending the rest of my days on the dancefloor (and doing the dishes) trying to do her moves.

MYRON KRUEGER'S CRITTER

Myron Krueger is an American computer artist who developed early interactive works. He is also considered to be one of the first generation virtual reality and augmented reality researchers.

He envisioned the art of interactivity, as opposed to art that happens to be interactive, by exploring the space between humans and computers. His focus lies in the possibilities of interaction itself, rather than on an art project, which is supposed to evoke some response in the user. Though his work was somewhat unheralded in mainstream VR thinking, which culminated the "goggles 'n gloves" archetype, his legacy has experienced greater interest as more recent technological advancements move toward unencumbered interactions.

In the video above, Myron Krueger presents his "Critter" and creativity machine at a technology and art conference at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 1986.

TRON LEGACY IS THE NEW PHANTOM MENACE

TRON LEGACY blows harder than The Phantom Menace. Commercial directors should not be allowed to touch classic films. At least George Lucas ruined his own mythos. Joseph Kosinski would have been better off doing a fashion spread based on TRON. What disappointed me most, wasn't the fact that they ditched the character TRON, or that the new lightcycles drive like cars from the Fast and Furious, meaning they don't turn in 90degree angles on a grid but in fact glide and spin out with a tire screech, I was most offended by the female lead who was a vapid woman/child. Who ever heard of a wimpy woman is science fiction? Get an education! Worst of all, is the disappointing soundtrack. I suspect Daft Punk spent the last two years they claimed they were working on the music, driving around France in sports cars listening to the Terminator soundtrack. They need a helmet update.

I love this video so much that I have been keeping it a secret, hoping nobody else would discover it. Today I realized that was ridiculous and that everyone NEEDS to see the pioneering efforts of MIT students who were developing new ways of communicating with computers through gesture, voice, and collaboration.

COMPUTER REALITIES - TRON 1982

As passionate as I am about analog effects, model making, and puppetry, I admit there have been occasions where I have exclaimed "Tron (1982) is the most beautiful movie ever made"!

After viewing Computer Realities: The making of Tron, I can't help but feel the anxiety of the special effects people of that time. To them, here comes The CRAY 1 Supercomputer, parallel with the plot of TRON,here comes MASTER CONTROL. Their fears are right on. 28 years later, computer graphics have not only taken over the movie industry, their impact on viewers have rendered the work of these special effects pioneers as "cheesy" or worse yet "campy".

Simultaneously, I find the CRAY 1 Supercomputer an amazing tool and can understand the excitement and the inspiration of the programmers working with it.

So when does technology go too far? How do we go from TRON to BEOWOLF (2007)? Is TRON the exception because it's self aware,as it is a movie about computing itself?

That said, I'm looking forward to TRON LEGACY, even though they ditched the old look. I trust Steven Lisberger, more than let's say, George Lucas. We shall see!

THE TRIPODS

The Tripods is based on a series of novels by John Christopher and was jointly produced by the BBC and the Seven Network in Australia. In a post-apocalyptic future, humanity have been conquered and enslaved by unseen alien entities who travel about in gigantic three-legged walking machines referred to as "the tripods". Human society is largely pastoral, with few habitations larger than villages, and what little industry exists is conducted under the watchful presence of the tripods whom are believed to be their overlords.

From the age of 14 humans are required to obtain implants called "caps", which suppress curiosity and creativity and leave the recipient placid and docile, incapable of dissent. Two boys from a small English village decide to escape before they are capped and find themselves on an adventure through France, which winds up being more alien to them than the Tripods themselves.

Soon into their journey, they hook up with a skinny inventor whiz kid named, Beanpole, who has a terribly fake french accent, but that could also be the reason why his character is so lovable. What's also unintentionally entertaining is how many times they come up with reasons to speak English rather than French while in France.

I watched all 13 episodes in a row today. Call me crazy, but I highly recommend it for any lover of a good teleplay. A rainy or snowy day with a cup of tea would be the ideal conditions for a day with The Tripods.

Esther Pearl Watson took time out from painting pink UFOs to paint Tetra and The Multinauts. It's the best thing ever! It looks as though the Multinauts teleported to Garland, Texas and in the the teleportation process they were transformed into Esther characters.
OR OR OR....The Multinauts have teleported into a thrift store painting.
Either way you look at it, it's fantastic and I will NEVER sell it!

The Multinauts Episode Two Mirrorman may look like a beautiful BBC science fiction program but look deeper into the ideas it's presenting. On one level it's a futuristic adventure. On another it explores the many facets of alternate realities including Virtual Reality, Reality Television, the lives of role playing game characters, corporate reality, and realms within a power crystal.
This journey into the phantasmagoric guest stars Geneva Jacuzzi as Terracotta, an evil entity that feeds on the menergy of living beings and also includes a cameo by Francois Sagat.

Douglas Trumbull, a true pioneer in the field of Special Effects, known for films like 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), and Blade Runner (1982). Made his biggest effort to push the theater experience with the Universal Studios "Back to The Future" Ride. This was recently removed and replaced by The Simpson's ride, which is actually the most post-modern ride in history. More on that at a later date perhaps. Today lets pretend we're in a Delorean with hydraulics and praise Douglas Trumbell for his efforts in pushing the limits, especially when technology wasn't in sync with his vision.

Should I ever have a child or even have to look after one, I too will make them watch Buckaroo Bonzai and do a movie review of it.
This kid understands it more than most people do. At least he knows that when you go through solid matter you contact aliens.

“Growing up on movie sets has its ups and its downs. I mean sure, it’s great, you get lots of attention, only three hours a day of school. There’s make-up and wardrobe, movie premieres, limousines. It all sounds like fun, but when you are 12 or 13 years old, your very, very impressionable. And I know it’s easy to get off track. Like me, some of you don’t have Moms and Dads to bring you up. I mean, let’s face it, it’s tough being a kid. So be smart, don’t get messed up, stay in school. Be anybody you wanna be.”

In 2004 I was collecting interviews with celebrities I had once shared the dance floor with at Alphy's Soda Pop Club, a private club for teenage celebrities and their friends, in the late 1980's. The club promoter, Alphy Hoffman and I had developed a rapport, and the more I learned about the club, the more interviews I wanted, because although I didn't necessarily want to find "the truth", I became obsessed with listening to everyone's version of it.

I was on the phone with actor's agents constantly. Suprisingly, a lot of celebrities agreed to do interviews with me, speaking casually and freely about their pasts. There was one thing however that began to haunt me. At the end of almost every interview, they would all ask me the same question, "What happened to Corey Haim?"

Corey Haim was the biggest teen star at the time and was the first of the stars to host Alphy's Soda Pop Club. Honestly I hadn't even considered contacting him because he seemed "too famous" to ask for an interview. I also knew it would be extremely hard to find him because he had no listing at the Screen Actors Guild, and no one I had interviewed had talked to him in years.

For those who don't know Corey Haim, he was the most famous teenage actor in America in the 1980's. Most people whether they like to admit it or not, fell in love with him when he played the lovable nerd in the film, "Lucas". He had an extremely cute face and a pouty look that appealed to the era.
By the time he was 18 years old, he averaged 3 movies a year. Almost all of them were hits. Somewhere along the way,he got into drugs...heavily. His looks deteriorated fast and by the mid-90's he disappeared.

As the idea of interviewing him continued to haunt me, I phoned an anonymous contact of mine and asked her if she could help me find Corey Haim. She advised me that it wasn't a good idea, but gave me the number to an agency in Canada. When Corey Haim's agent agreed to the interview, I was well aware of how people love to exploit Corey Haim, as his story was so ripe for the tabloids. In my heart I had no intention to do so. Plus the agent thought him talking to me would be a positive step in re-establishing his career.

Two weeks later I was on the phone with Corey Haim.

March 2, 2004
It’s 3:00 in Toronto, Canada and I’m talking to Corey Haim on the telephone.

JJS: When did you move back to Toronto?

COREY HAIM: I’ve been back for about 5 and a half years, off and on. But I’ve been back permanently for about a year and a half now. So I’m home. I’m here man!
(Then in a Dr Evil type of voice), “ it’s freaking weird in Los Angeles!”
Then in a California dude accent, “lost my freakin’ back bone. Really people got freaky in Los Angeles, yeah right.”

JJS: (Laughing) uh?

CH: So you wanna do this?

JJS: Let’s do this! Let’s talk about Alphy’s! How did you and Corey Feldman become the original hosts of the party?

CH: OK well, these are very vague memories. It’s hard to say exactly what happened. Anyway, I think I got a call from Feldman and he said, “Listen, I know this person named Alphy and he’s going to start throwing these parties with the son and partial owner of New York Seltzer. He said something like “how do you feel about going and checking the scene?” and I said,”Let’s go man!” So we went down and it was cool. I met Alphy and I met Randy Miller. Then it started happening once a week and went on for years. I was going out with Alyssa (Milano) at the time and also kind of going out with Nicole (Eggert). We were all seeing each other off and on. We were young. It was the eighties and it was different times. We were all friends with each other. We were like the “Brat Pack” but we had our own people. It was Ricky Schroder, Alfonso Ribeiro, Feldman, Me, Nicole, Alyssa, Scott Grimes. We were like our own team.

JJS: You were all actors but you were also all going to the same school, Excelsior School at the time, as well, right?

CH: Yeah. I went to Excelsior, Corey went to Excelsior, as well as his ex-girlfriend Katie, and I think Alyssa might have even gone to Excelsior, Scott Grimes went there. I don’t remember if Alyssa or Nicole went there but pretty much all of us were there at one point or another. I mean, I went and stayed for not even a year. It just got a little too weird. I wanted more schooling. You started at 8:30 and you were out of there by 12:30 plus you’d break for an hour for lunch. So it was just 3 hours of school. That’s what you would get on set too, but this was in a classroom so it was a different environment and you’d learn stuff but not much in three hours. So I told my parents, ”In a month or two max, I want you to pull me out of this place. I mean I’m happy being with all my buddies and stuff but I got four movies coming up and I have a film “this” year and I need schooling before I do any of this because this is not a way a kid should be going to school.” I don’t think anyway. So I got pulled out of Excelsior, which I was real happy about.

It was real hard for the teachers too when we were all in there together. All the other kids wanted to know what “it was like” and everyday it was basically like pulling up to a publicity kind of thing but we were supposed to be going to school. It was just not right. It was a great school, don’t get me wrong. The teachers were really qualified. Especially when they had to deal with actors all day long. They were cool, but strict enough that if we got out of line a little bit , they knew how to deal with us. I mean we were not like the average kids who would grow up and become accountants or whatever. We thought we were “THE BOMB!” or whatever you would have called it back then. We thought we were like the G FORCE of the G FORCE. We got out of line a few times and often got shut down by the teachers. I mean SHUT DOWN! It was a really weird situation. I mean I had four or five movies left to do every year on the year. So I just never had time to go to school. Sometimes I would have 3 or 4 months max in between shooting my next film and I would hire tutors and stuff like that. They would make sure I at least got my high school diploma.

JJS: So you were on a quest to get your education?

CH: Don’t get me wrong. I hated school just like everybody else. Hold on let me get rid of the other line. Just one second. (Corey puts me on hold for 2 minutes)
Sorry about that. That’s was my boy!

JJS: Your boy?

CH: Yeah, my boy. Um, last year I had really bad stomach problems so I did this procedure. It’s called colonic irrigation.

JJS: (Laughing) Are you serious?

CH: Yeah, it’s really gross. But I got his infection. I mean I got this super bad infection in my stomach and my chest. So I went and saw this guy and he’s like a master and he put me on a diet and all this stuff.

JJS: Ever done The Master Cleanse?

CH: Uh. I’ve heard of it but I’ve never done it. I’ll only go to a certain point. The Master Cleanse is too much and it’s gross. It’s nuts. People can’t hack it! That’s why it’s called The Master Cleanse. It’s hardcore. So back to the topic. Yeah I went to Excelsior, got pulled, I don’t want to go into it too much more, but I passed the grade I wanted to pass. Did it properly and legally. Got my tutors, did my thing. But once it got to stuff like 32 times 100 minus 45 equals “X”, I bailed. I said this will not help me say, “Can I have a receipt?” when I go shopping. Math leaves a very bad taste in my mouth in regards to my schooling. I didn’t want to get into it. You know I’m an actor, right? So back then I wasn’t really thinking about mathematical situations, Quantum Physics and all that. I didn’t want to become “Beautiful Minded”. I didn’t even THINK about another option. I guess I was born to be an actor and that’s just what I do. I didn’t even think that when everything equaled “X” that it was really going to help me in life. So the day that happened, I hopped the fence. I bailed school at 13 and a half. Then we moved to LA and I went to Excelsior for a little while and eventually quit that too.

(In 1997, Corey Haim filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection at the age of 24.)

JJS: Is that how you met Scott Grimes and everyone by going to the Excelsior School?

CH: We all lived like two to five blocks away from each other at the time. I don’t even remember how I met Scottie. I think it was Alyssa who introduced me to “Grimies”. Everyone knew everyone. Through Corey too, and I would introduce people to Corey. We all just knew each other. We were all so close, so close. We’d walk to each other’s houses. Sometimes I’d drive three seconds and pull up into Milano’s driveway.

JJS: Did you all go to Alphy’s together then?

CH: Sometimes. Not really I’d usually meet up with them there.

JJS: Can you describe on e of your favorite parties? When I talked to Alphy and Randy they both mention the debut party, the one in which you hosted with Feldman and Randy jumped off the Mondrian?

CH: Well, we hosted that one but there was one I hosted solo later on. It was about a year later, I think. It was the Halloween Party. That one was mine. That was pretty cool. But the one Corey and I hosted yes, Randy jumped off I believe it was the eleventh floor of the Mondrian, he had a bottle of New York Seltzer in his hand. Landed and then took the lid off the soda and drank it. They turned it into a commercial. It was great and executed beautifully. I was right there looking up at him the whole time holding one of his tigers. It was pretty trippy.

JJS: What was it like to hold one of Randy’s tigers?

CH: I’ve held many of his tigers. Well, back then I used to go to Randy’s house. He had spare bedrooms and I spent a few nights there. I had my own room and well, I fell in love with one of his bobcats, who was tame. He was this cute little bobcat! Randy knew I was into animals like that and stuff and he had a lot of different animals. For some reason I was the guy who go to hold them.  OK! One time Randy, myself, and two other people we were in a limousine with a jaguar and Randy passed me the leash and said, “ hold it from here and if he gets out of line, just hit him lightly on the side of his head and just say Down! Down! Down! Just give him the commands I’m giving you.” And then suddenly the jaguar woke up in the limo and let out a “RAAAAAR” so the vet that was in there had to shoot him up a little bit of a tranquilizer. I mean you’re talking about a wild animal in a limousine! You know what I mean? Everybody could have been dead! But by the time we got out of the limo, I was holding the jaguar and everything was cool. Hold on one second. I’m waiting for a call from my agent. One sec. (Corey goes to the other line and is back in 30 seconds.) Hey! I gotta go right this second. Call me back in half and hour…half an hour. No, no, 40 minutes no later.

I call back in 40 minutes and Corey is not home. I wait another hour and he’s still not there. Then an hour after that, he picks up.

JJS: Hey Corey, it’s Jennifer.

CH: Oh! Sorry (yes, he says it in a Canadian accent) I was longer than expected. Um..I was just longer than I had expected. I had forgot. I had like gum surgery last week and I had a really bad root canal gone wrong. No this was two weeks ago, so I had an appointment today that I had forgotten about. So he had to call me and say “yeah, this and this and what the fuck’s the matter with you. You’re like an hour and a half late. So duh, duh, duh…I had to go down there. I had forgotten about it. It was just a check up.

JJS: Uh. OK. Are you alright?

CH: Yeah he gave me some antibiotics that really helped. Sorry about that. Sorry where were we?

JJS: I forgot so let’s just start talking about Alphy’s Soda Pop Club.

CH: OK Let me sum it up. The Alphy’s Soda Pop Club was you know in the old days it was like “The Rat Pack” which was Dean Martin , Jerry Lewis and then there was The Brat Pack. So we were our own pack. I think we even had a name, but I forgot. But basically all of us met at Alphy’s. It was like a congregation hall for all of us to hang at. It was like our temple, a sacred temple for a minute. We all had a great time. No drugs, no liquor, just New York Seltzer and dancing. It was great. You were there, you know!
It was always really fun to plan the night we were going to Alphy’s. That was the thing. It always changed locations. It was a lot of fun. Everyone who was anyone in the eighties used to show up back then.

JJS: Scott Grimes told me you used to have your own secret language and hand signal that went “Diiiiiiiiiine!”. Is that true? What does it mean?

CH: Oh my god, I can’t believe he remembers that? Yeah, but I can’t tell you what it means.

JJS: Why not? No one even knows what it is?

CH: It’s just something that goes way back with an old friend of mine. It’s a thing I can’t even tell you. I’ll take it to the grave with me.

JJS: I can’t believe you’re not going to tell me what “Diiiiiine!” means.

CH: It’s been dead for 20 years now and it’s just something I happened to do and everyone picked up on it.

JJS: So it’s not actually a secret language then. It’s just a code for something else.

CH: I swore by an oath, man and I just can’t tell you. (in a really serious tone ) It’s not just a saying, but it’s the way you say it. You said it pretty good though.
There is a correct way of saying it and there is a correct way of speaking this language and there is not. So, it’s just a cool little thing I have going on.

JJS: O.K. So you won’t tell me lets move on. So why did you stop going to Alphy’s?

CH: I got bored of it. This is before I even got into drugs, but a few people were starting to do drugs around me and people started drinking. Not Scott, not Alyssa, not Nicole, not us. This was not my drug time yet. Not Corey’s either. We were never alcoholics. Maybe we were drug addicts but we were never alcoholics. But a few people would bail the party room and go downstairs and hang out by the pool , which was real nice at night time and stuff. But we would walk through and you’d see some of the people who were upstairs, some were actors and some were musicians, but the bartender would be like No Problem! You guys can have some drinks even though I know you’re underage but I know who you are and you hang out at at this place all the time, so here you go. Anyway I got bored of it. I got annoyed with a lot of other shit too. I got really sick and tired of Alphy to be honest with you. I don’t think he’s a good human being and you can print that shit too!

JJS: I’ve interviewed many people about Alphy’s as well as spoken with Alphy and Randy Miller.

(interrupting) I hung with Randy a lot. He was one of my best friends.
I love Randy. I will forever love Randy. We had so many good times together like being on the back of his Ninja Kawasaki 1500. I mean so many cool times.

JJS: Sounds like he had a pretty awesome house back then.

CH: He had a great house and we had great times. But comparing a person like Randy to Alphy , there is no comparision. Alphy is not even on the scale of 1-10 and Randy is an 11, a 15, a 20!

JJS: Did you feel like you were being used because of your celebrtity ?

CH: Well, this guy had nothing better to do than get so-called “stars”, I hate calling myself that man, I am a moving actor. I move from here to there and that’s my job. So if people want to call me a star, god bless them. That’s nice to hear, it’s awesome, but I never call myself that because it’s just disrespectful I think. Anyway Alphy was older and he needed to do something with his life and I think he just met some people in the industry and became very attached to the idea of the Entertainment business. From that point on he said, “You know what? I’m gonna open up some sort of place where all these kids can come and drink New York Seltzer and dance all night long. That’s what he did and it worked. He got real lucky.

JJS: So you were very close to Randy Miller.

CH: He’s truly a great human being. I haven’t spoken to him in years I hope I get to speak to him sometime again. He was killer! I had a great time growing up with that guy and he taught me some other things too.

JJS: Did Alphy do something bad like offer any of you guys drugs?

CH; No, no, no. Never. Let me make this clear. I don’t think Alphy started out intentionally using all of us to further his career or his life. I don’t think it started like that and we all just liked being in the same room together. Alyssa,Scott, Corey, and me . Everybody. It just happened to popular. But no, he never ever offered any of us drugs, liquor, nothing. Never!

JJS: Well, I see it as he created this club for Teenage celebrities, it had his name on it, it began to be written up in all the teen magazines, and became very popular. He took it as far as he could take it.

CH: Well yeah. Then it died out. By the end when it was dying out everyone was on drugs! I was on drugs, Feldman was on drugs. At the end of it were 16 or 17 years old! Lost Boys was done and we going to other clubs and doing drugs. So at that time, a lot of people were getting messed up. I’m not going to name names. I’ll mention my name. I was getting messed up. Corey was getting messed up. But everyone knows about that already.

JJS: Are you still friends with Corey Feldman?

CH: Oh yeah. Corey and I spoke two days ago. We speak all the time. We ‘re still brothers, best friends, however you wanna say it. We’re always going to be like more than just brothers. We’re closer than family. It’s weird.

JJS: When exactly did you become friends with Feldman?

CH: 2 months before The Lost Boys started shooting we became really good friends. Were talking 17 or 18 years of friendship. That’s a long time to know somebody.

JJS: So, I have one question in regards to your video Me, Myself, and I.

CH: OK that was done by a friend of mine named (the other line clicks) Hold on! Let me just get rid of the other line. (one minute goes by) Hey! I forgot I had somebody coming over. Hold on a second.

In the background we hear Shit! God! Mutherfucker! Shit! Oh shit!
Gets back on the phone.

CH: Shit, sorry.

JJS: Are you alright?

CH: Now, I have to change clothes! qSomeone is coming over from my agency. I forgot about that shit! I gotta sign some contracts and shit. Read it over and stuff like that. Ok so go ahead.

JJS: What is Japanese funk?

CH: What is what? What is Japanese Funk?

JJS: In Me, Myself and I, you say your favorite music was Japanese Funk. I wanna know what that is because I want some.

CH: Oh! I was just messing around. At the time Japanese Funk was Japanese funk. It just kinda goes along with that secret language I invented. It’s whatever! There is no such thing as Japanese Funk.

JJS: I bet you there is.

CH: I dunno, I was like 15 years old.

JJS: Who’s idea was it to make Me, Myself, and I?

CH: A friend of mine, a friend of mine. It was his idea and he thought of all the ideas and I just showed up. We filmed it at my house.

Suddenly there is a dead silence and Corey seems to have become very distracted. Someone apparently just arrived from his agency and he tells me he needs to go and sign some contracts. We agree to talk the next day but he never answered the phone at our scheduled interview time. I tried again the day after that ,and again, no answer.

Recently Telefantasy Studios was asked by Converse and Paper Magazine to be part of an art fair for High School students at the Ricardo Monteblan (Khan) theatre. We built a small studio at the theatre complete with a table top lighting set up for the pizza and a green screen for the actors. During the fair the high school students helped us produce a futuristic pizza commercial. Students who wanted to act were put into costume and makeup and those who liked art and drawing helped us make props. The students had a ball learning about the world of movie magic and we were inspired by their enthusiasm. This is going to be a hell of a commercial.

I grew up watching Night Flight. No wonder I thought it was possible to be a video artist. Recalling this clip makes me reminiscent of the days when video art was something they would actually show on television. John Sanborn and Dean Winkler are such cool guys! Chris Verene’s new book and series “Family,” published in 2009 by Twin Palms Publishers, is the sequel to his critically acclaimed monograph about his birthplace, Galesburg, Illinois, where his family has lived for three generations. Galesburg is a central Illinois town that has fallen on hard times, much like other small towns across the United States. This series conveys his bittersweet fondness for the now decaying community in which he grew up, which still holds lessons about aging, disability, unemployment, alcoholism and other difficulties.
Verene has been photographing his family and friends since 1984 and has committed to this project for the duration of his life. “The key to my artwork,“ Verene has written, “is that it can only be born out of real and deep friendships and bonds with the people in the pictures.” Each image, whether it is of his family at Christmas breakfast, or of a rundown trailer of two of his friends, is accompanied by a hand-written, sincere text, giving the viewer an insight into Verene’s relationship to his subjects.

HIJACKED PHOTOGRAPHERS IN TV DOCUMENTARY

Exciting news! A documentary film based on the Hijacked Photobook is in the works! Producer Jack Pam has been flying around the world interviewing everyone from the book and taking a look into the way in which they approach their work. When Jack came to interview me, I happened to be shooting Francois Sagat for a segment of my sci-fi show,"The Multinauts" ( In the segment Francois will be advertising a futuristic perfume....and that's all I'm gonna say about that for now) Don't know when the documentary will air, but I sure am looking forward to it.

"AS USEFUL AS AN INFLATABLE PIN CUSHION"

A few years ago my friend Francesca Baglione asked me if I would participate in a small show she created for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival called "Miss High Leg Kick's Fashion Bus". Based on the structure of a high fashion catwalk, caricatures of everyday London people would emerge from a double-decker bus onto a catwalk with all the pizazz and confidence of a supermodel. It's goal; to entertain the viewer but also to remind the world that everyone is fabulous. (this realization must only take place after you are done laughing hysterically) I figured if Im going to photograph this show, I absolutely have to be in it as well.

The first year we did the show, it was a "failure". Failure meaning the shows were somewhat empty often having to perform for an audience of two people. When the reviews came out,one in particular read "FASHION BUS- As useful as an inflatable pin cushion" 1 star. Francesca burst into tears. In an attempt to comfort her I said, "Who ever said art was useful? A blender is useful" and from then on we took being an inflatable pin cushion as a compliment.

We pressed on in all that supposed failure. A years later, The British Arts Council saw the show and decided to back us up. With their help and everyone at the Colchester Arts Center, for the past two summers we have been able to take this show on the road and turn it into a spectacular celebration of everyday people.

This summer we went back to Edinburgh to prove ourselves. To reclaim and redefine inflatable pin cushions. Yet by the time we got there, we realized it didn't really matter what people thought. The cast was so involved in the mere act of performing that the show was not strictly assigned to the stage. Everywhere we went was a stage...what more can you expect of a bunch of show offs? Taking photographs was easy.

Rather than show my own photographs of our recent time in Edinburgh, the above photos are the work of my friend and fellow cast mate Steve Nice, who picked up a camera after we met during the first run of Fashion Bus in 2006 and is now studying at Kingston University in London. I am so excited for him and his emergence into the world of photography.
